Family History

Joseph Whittaker (junior) was born in 1891 at Burton on Trent and was the son of Joseph Whittaker (senior) and Harriett Ann Whittaker, née West of 8 Heath Road, Stapenhill, Burton on Trent. His father Joseph (senior) was born in 1852 at Barrow on Trent, his mother Harriett Ann West was born in 1852 at Boyleston, they were married on 15th April 1880 at Boyleston, they had the following children, Eliza b1881, Hannah b1882, Harriett b1884, John b1886, Lois Bertha b1887, Joseph b1891 and Kate b1898 all were born at Burton on Trent. In the 1911 census huis family are residing at 8 Heath Road, Stapenhill, Burton on Trent, they are shown as Joseph 60 yrs a labourer at Alsop's Brewery, he is living with his wife Harriett 59 yrs and their children, Lois Bertha 24 yrs a labeller at Alsop's brewery Joseph Whittaker (junior) married his wife Ellen Truswell, (born 4th April 1890) they were married in 1912 at Mansfield, they lived at 225 Hewitt Street, Warsop and had two children Winifred born April 1913 and Ethel, born January 1915 Following his death his widow Ellen was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week which commenced on 22nd February 1916.

Military History

Lance Corporal Joseph Whittaker enlisted at Mansfield on 8th May 1915, he served with the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment , he was killed in action on 16th June 1915 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate, Belgium.
