Family History

Charles was born in 1900 in Flintham and was the son of Herbert a farmer and Fanny Whittaker, of Flintham, Newark, Notts. Herbert and Fanny had a very large family , having had 14 children , however sadly three of them died in infancy , their children were Edwin , Thorpe, John, Rose, Eleanor, Charles, George, Bertha, Jane, James and Walter. In the 1901 census the family are living at Main Street, Flintham Herbert is a farmer. By the 1911 census the family are still living at Flintham and Herbert is still working as a farmer. Charles is 11 years of age. Sadly Herbert and Fanny were to loose two of their sons during the Great War , Charles and John

Military History

Charles enlisted in Nottingham on 26th August 1917, he was 18 years and 10 months of age , his occupation was given as a horseman and his religion as Church of England, his next of kin was his father Herbert of Flintham. He was called up on 23rd May 1918 and on 25th May 1918 was posted to the 8th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derbys ) Regiment. On 29th September 1918 he embarked from England to join the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front . He joined his unit in the field on 5th Ocotber 1918 but within two weeks on 18th October 1918 he died of wounds. He is buried in Vadencourt British Cemetery, Maissemy , Aisne, France in grave reference II. C. 7

Extra Information

His brother John Whittaker Pt 18410 Sherwood Foresters also served and died in the 'Great War' he died on 22nd July 1916 and is buried in Aubigny Communal Cemetery Pas de Calais, France.
