John Knowles was born in 1879 at South Muskham and was the son of James a cottager and Elizabeth Knowles nee Taylor . His father James was born in 1820 in Hough, Lincolnshire and his mother Elizabeth Taylor was born in 1838 at Newark. they were married in 1879 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell registration district. John married his wife Jane Elizabeth Smalley (born 2nd July 1881 ) in 1903 at Newark and went on to have the following children, Alice born 13th February 1904, Elsie May born 4th June 1906, Violet Ethel born 10th January 1909 and Freda Elizabeth born 15th December 1912 they lived at 5 Sheppards Row, Bathley, Newark. In 1911 census John lived at Girton Nottinghamshire and was shown as John 30 yrs a general labourer he is living with his wife Jane Elizabeth 29 yrs and their children Alice 7 yrs a scholar, Elsie May 4 yrs and Violet Ethel 2 yrs. Following John's death his widow was awarded a pension of 28 shillings and 9 pence which commenced on 11th March 1918.
Gunner John Knowles enlisted at Newark, he served with the 26th battery, 17th brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He landed in France on 26th August 1915 and was killed in action on 11th August 1917 and is buried at Bleuet Farm Cemetery, Belgium grave reference I.C.9
