Family History

Isaac Christopher Goodband known as Christopher was born in 1890 at Knipton, Leicestershire ad was the son of Isaac a domestic gardener and Harriett Goodband née Geeson of Knipton, Grantham His father Isaac was born in 1865 at Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire and his mother Harriett Geeson was born in 1861 at Knipton, Leicestershire they were married in 1888 their marriage was record in the Grantham Registration District, they went on to have 9 children all of whom were born at Knipton, they were Isaac Christopher b1890, Mildred b1892, David John b1894, Arthur b1896, Harriett b1899, Rachel Annie b1901, Ruth b1902, Harold b1905 and Elsie Margaret b1908. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Knipton near Grantham and are sown as Isaac 46 yrs a gardener, he is living with his wife Harrriett 50 yrs and their children Arthur 15 yrs unemployed, Harriett 12 yrs a scholar, Rachel 10 yrs scholar, Harold 6 yrs and Elsie Margaret 3 yrs. In the 1911 census Christopher has left his home and is shown as being 21 yrs of age single and a servant working as a groom on the Thoresby Estate, he is living with Hubert Cosier 41 yrs a stud groom and his family at Perlethorpe.

Military History

Private Christopher Goodband enlisted on 26th August 1914 at Worksop, he gave his age as 24 yrs , his occupation as that of a groom and his address as Thoresby, Ollerton. He served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment . He joined the British Expeditionary Force in France on 9th February 1915. He was wounded by a gunshot wound to his abdomen and returned to England for treatment on 15th March 1915. Following his treatment and recovery he was posted to the Gallipoli campaign on 28th August 1915. He was killed in action on 28th September 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey

Extra Information

His brother David John Goodband also served and died in the 'Great War, he enlisted at Huddersfield and served with the service number 11945 in the 8th battalion West Riding Regiment. He died on 23rd November 1916 and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
