He was the son of William Hilton and Clara Ashworth of 50 Manor Street Sneinton Nottingham. His father was born in 1866 in Nottingham and worked as a cotton factory manager. His mother was born in 1867 at Radcliffe on Trent. He had two brothers, Arthur and George, born in 1893 and four sisters; Evelyn, Elsie, born in 1897, Lilian, born in 1899 and Florence, born in 1902. In 1911 they lived at The Mill House Victoria Road, Netherfield, Nottinghamshire, but later moved to 50 Manor Street, Sneinton, Nottingham. Leonard Ashworth attended Mundella Secondary School. His brother George also attended Mundella School and was a 2nd Lieut in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) 19th Bn, attd 8th Bn The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, and died 2/10/1916 (Theipval Memorial).
He volunteered for service and was No. 26875 in the Sherwood Foresters, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant. He arrived in France on 06/03/1916. He was later sent home for officer training and received a commission in 13th Bn York and Lancaster Regt. His battalion was involved in fighting on the Lys in April 1918 and he was reported as wounded and missing on April 12, 1918. His body was never recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial.
Leonard's brother, Second Lieutenant George Ashworth also died during the Great War.
