George Samuel Smith was born in 1888 at Eastwood and was the son of William a coal miner and Hannah Smith née Creswell of 24 Princess Street, Eastwood, Nottinghamshire.His father William was born in 1859 in Barmby in the Willows, Nottinghamshire, his mother Hannah Creswell was born in 1858 at Brinsley they were married on 10th September 1877 at the parish church at Kimberley, they went on to have the following children, Elizabeth b1879, William b1882, Annie b1886, George Samuel b1888, Joseph b1890, Martha Ann b1892, Sarah b1895, John b1896, Ernest b1897, and Thomas b1900 all were born at Eastwood. In the 1911 census the family were living at 24 Princess Street, Eastwood and are shown as William 50 yrs a coal miner he is living with his wife Hannah 51 yrs and their children, Martha Ann 19 yrs no occupation listed, Sarah 17 yrs no occupation listed, John 15 yrs a coal miner, Ernest 14 yrs a coal miner and Thomas 11 yrs a scholar, also living with them is a grandson Herbert 11 yrs a scholar. By the time of the 1911 census George Samuel has left the family home and is serving in the Army in the Royal Filed Artillery, we find him on the 1911 census in barracks n India , he is shown as 25 yrs of age , single and a driver in the Royal Field Artillery. George must have met his wife whilst stationed in India as we next find him marrying Maud Evelyn Martin (born 4th March 1889 at Cawnpore, India ) on 6th January 1914, they were married at Allahabad, India and went on to have a daughter Hannah Margaret born 31st July 1915 in Allahabad.

Military History

Driver George Samuel Smith enlisted at Nottingham before 1911 as in the 1911 census he is shown as being in barracks in India. He served with the 76th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He was was killed in Mesopotamia and his name is commemorated on the Basra Memorial in Iraq.
