Henry Stapleton was born in 1878 the of John a coal miner and Mary Ann Stapleton née Roberts. His father was born in 1850 at Kimberley, his mother in 1855 at Wakefield (died 1896 aged 46). Married in 1872, they had the following children - Florence b.1875 Wakefield, Eleanor b.1876 Wakefield, Henry b.1878 Wakefield, Mary Ann b.1881 Altoft Yorks, Eliza b.1882 Altoft, Yorks, John b.1884 Kimberley, Margaret b.1886 Kimberley, Minnie b.1889 Kimberley and Annie b.1890 Kimberley. In 1901 they lived at The Knowle, Kimberley.

Military History

Henry Stapleton enlisted at Ilkeston on 10th March 1915. He stated he had seen previous military service with the South Notts Hussars. On 11th March 1915 he joined the Army Service Corps at Bradford. He landed in Salonika on 26th January 1916. He died of pneumonia at No.29 General Hospital, Salonika, on 24th June 1916. He is buried in Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery.
