Family History

Joseph Harold Rowland was born in 1892 at Kimberley and was the son of William a coal miner and Mary Rowland née Shaw of Regent Street Kimberley Nottinghamshire. His father William was born in 1850 in Kimberley and his mother Mary Elizabeth Shaw was born in 1854 in Ripley, they were married in 1873 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 8 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Roger b1876, David b1879, William b1885, Joseph Harold b1892 and Stanley b 1895 all were born in Kimberley. In the 1911 census the family are living at James Street, Kimberley and are shown as William 61 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Mary 57 yrs and their children Joseph 19 yrs a bricklayer and Stanley 16 yrs a plumber.

Military History

Sapper Joseph Harold Rowland enlisted at Ilkeston and served with the 11th Field Company, Royal Engineers, he was killed in action on 10th August 1916 and is buried at Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz, Somme, France.
