Family History

Ernest Scholefield Gall was born in 1888 at Eastwood and was the son of the late James a bank manager and Annie Elizabeth Gall née Scholefield of 10 Larches Avenue East Sheen London. His father James was born in 1844 at Elgin, Scotland, he died in 1916 at Barnes, Surrey, he was aged 72 yrs, his mother Annie Elizabeth Scholefield was born in 1845 at Leeds, they were married in 1883 their marriage was recorded in the Leeds registration district, they had a further child Annie Charlotte born 1885 at Eastwood. The family moved to Eastwood prior to 1885 and in the 1911 census are shown living at Church Street, Eastwood and are shown as James Gall 67 yrs a bank manager, he is living with his wife Annie 64 yrs, also living at the address is a servant May Wright 19 yrs. On the same 1911 census we find that Ernest has left the family home, we find him living at 8 South View, Barnard Castle he is shown as being 23 yrs single and a bank clerk. His mother later lived at 63 Elm Bank Gardens, Barnes Surrey.

Military History

Sergeant Ernest Scholefield Gall enlisted at Sunderland on 11th August 1914 he gave his age as 24 yrs and 3 months and stated he was a bank cashier, he was posted to the 7th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps. He was promoted to Sergeant on 9th September 1914 and landed in France on 18th May 1915. He died of wounds on 30th July 1915 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate memorial
