Maurice Henry Dare was born in 1893 at Salcombe and was the son of Edwin a general labourer and Isabella Dare née Hoople of 24 Fore Street, Salcombe. His father was born in 1844 at Churchstow, Devon and his mother Isabella Louisa Hoople was born in 1853 in Salcombe, they were married 1873 at Kingsbridge and went on to have 11 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 24 Fore Street, Salcombe and are shown as Edwin 67 yrs a general labourer, he is living with his wife Isabella 58 yrs a greengrocer and their children Lizzie 27 yrs an assistant in mother business, Isabel 20 yrs assistant in mothers business and Maurice Henry 18 yrs a boatman
Pioneer Maurice Henry Dare enlisted at Exeter and served with 68th Field Company Royal Engineers. His medal index card denotes he first entered a theatre of war on 12th July 1915 at Egypt. He served at Gallipoli where he was killed in action on 15th August 1915 , he is buried at Green Hill Cemetery, Turkey and commemorated on Special Memorial A.1
The Royal Engineers at Newark This was one of a number of Engineer Training Centres set up after the outbreak of war to accommodate the needs of the fast expanding Royal Engineers. It was at Coddington Hall, some 2 miles East of Newark and there were at least 11 companies there. Apart from training, there was a holding and drafting company for men waiting to go overseas and also No 3 Cadet Company which presumably was for officers. It would appear his connection with Newark is the fact that he was billeted in the town with Sarah Ann Quiningborough of Harcourt Street, Newark and her two sons who also served during the great war
