Edward Spencer was born in 1898 at Grantham and was the son of Eliza Mary Spencer. His mother Eliza Mary Spencer married in 1898 at Grantham to John Edward Cook an iron Turner , they lived at 5 Smith Street, Newark. His stepfather John Edward Cook was born in 1879 at Grantham and his mother Eliza Mary Spencer was born in 1878 also at Grantham, following their marriage they went on to have the following children, Hilda Fanny Cook b1900 Grantham, Annie Elizabeth Cook b1901 Grantham, Doris Mary Cook b1906 Newark, John William Cook b1909 Newark and Phyllis Cook b 1910 Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 5 Smith Street, Newark and are shown as John Edward Cook 32 yrs an iron turner, he is living with his wife Eliza Mary Cook 38 yrs and her son Edward Spencer 13 yrs a scholar and their children, Hilda Fanny Cook 11 yrs a scholar, Annie Elizabeth Cook 10 yrs a scholar, Doris Mary Cook 5 yrs a scholar, John William Cook 2 yrs and Phyllis Cook 3 months old.
Private Edward Spencer enlisted at Newark and served with the 2/6th battalion Sherwood Foresters , he was killed in action on 21st March 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
