Family History

Samuel Burton was born in 1897 in Keyworth and was the son of Samuel (senior) a platelayer and Elizabeth Mary Burton née Carter they lived at New Row Keyworth. His father Samuel (senior) was born in 1857 in Keyworth, his mother was born in 1857 in Basford, they were married in 1883 they marriage being recorded in the Bingham Registration district, they had a total of 12 children all of whom survived , however a search of the 1881-1911 census reveal only the following children , all born in Keyworth Robert b1883 Ada b1886, Amy b1888, Eliza b1890, Charlotte b1892, Florence b1895, Samuel b1897, Emily b1900, and Albert b1902in the 1911 census the family are living at New Road Keyworth and are shown as Samuel 54 yrs head of the family a platelayer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 54 yrs and their children, Ada 26 yrs a seamstress, Samuel 13 yrs a farm boy, Emily 11 yrs a scholar, Albert 9 yrs a scholar and their grandson Ernest 1 yr.

Military History

Private Samuel Burton enlisted in Nottingham on 21st June 1913, he enlisted for six years service in the Special Reserve, he gave his age as 18 yrs and 9 months (his birth was registered in 1897 so he was only 16 yrs of age) he gave his occupation as farm labourer. He was posted into the 4th battalion Sherwood Foresters and undertook his recruit training between 21st June 1913 and 20th November 1913, and then training camps thereafter. On the outbreak of war he was embodied and on 11th November 1914 he landed in France as a reinforcement to the 2nd battalion, joining the British Expeditionary Force. He was killed in action on 6th March 1915 and is buried in Houplines Communal Cemetery Extension , grave reference III C 22.
