Charles Simpson was born in 1883 he was the son of the late George a butcher and Sarah Ann Simpson née Brewin. of Rose Cottage Hickling Nottinghamshire. George was born in 1852 at Cotgrave, he died in 1900 aged 48 yrs, Sarah Ann Brewin was born in 1856 at Shoby, Leicestershire, they were married in 1880 their marriage was recorded in the Melton Mowbray registration district. They had 8 children. In 1911 the family are living at Rose Cottage, Hickling, Sarah Ann 55 yrs and a widow, she is living with 3 of her children, Ida 29 yrs working at home, Ronald 21 yrs a butcher and Rowland 20 yrs a grazier. in 1911 Charles has left the family home, he is living at Long Clawson, he is shown as being 27 yrs and a butchers assistant, living with Thomas Jackson 61 yrs a butcher and his family,

Military History

Lance Corporal Charles Simpson (Named as 'Charlie' on CWGC record) enlisted at Melton Mowbray he initially served with the service number 28837 with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He later transferred to the 13th battalion Yorkshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 12th July 1917 and is buried at Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-Le-Grand Grave Reference: I.B.7)

Photograph of Charlie in uniform is in 'Hickling Reflections of Yesteryear: A further collection of notes and photographs', compiled by Hazel M Wadkin, Milford Printers (Sherwood Free Press), ISBN 0 9508086 1 X His brother Corporal Cecil Simpson enlisted at Loughborough, he served initially with the service number 32097 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. Later transferring to the 13th battalion Yorkshire Regiment he was killed in action on 23rd November 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval.
