Leonard was born in 1893 in Nottingham and was the son of Tom a Police Sergeant and Mary Andrews née Widdowson of 10,Sherbrooke Rd, Carrington, Nottingham. His father was born in 1854 in Mansfield and his mother Mary Widdowson was born in 1854 in Granby, they were married in 1875 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 8 children , sadly however 2 died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were all born in Nottingham and were : Thomas b1877, Alice b1879, Arthur b1881, Robert b1888, Gertrude b1890 and Leonard b1893. In the 1911 census the family are living at the Police Lodge, Hyson Green, Nottingham and are shown as Tom 57 yrs a police sergeant , he is living with his wife Mary 57 yrs and their children , Alice 32 yrs single and working at home, Gertrude 21 yrs single and a lace pattern girl and Leonard 18 yrs single and a fitter.
Private Leonard Andrews, enlisted in Lincoln served with the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, he was killed in action on 7th July 1916. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial
In memoriam published 7th July 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “ANDREWS. – In loving memory of our dear son, Pte. Leonard Andrews, Sherwood Foresters, fell in action July 7th, 1916. One year has passed, our hearts still sore, as time goes on we miss him more; one of the dearest, one of the best, we miss him most who loved him best. “ANDREWS. – In proud and tender memory of my dear brother, Pte. L. Andrews, who made the supreme sacrifice July 7th, 1916. There on the field of battle he bravely took his place, he fought and died for England and the honour of his race.
