William Ernest Hollingworth was born 1890 in Nottingham and was the son of William a railway guard and Eliza Ann Hollingworth née Walker of 302 Meadow Lane, Nottingham. His father William was born in 1869 in Nottingham and his mother Eliza Ann Walker was born in 1870 also in Nottingham, they were married in 1888 in Nottingham and went on to have 4 children all born in Nottingham, William Ernest b1890, Albert b1892, Harold James b1898 and Winifred Elizabeth b1904. William Ernest married his wife Ellen Walford in 1911 in Nottingham and they went on to have 4 children Walter b1911, Arthur b1913, Hilda b1915 and William b1916, all were born in Nottingham In the 1911 census William Ernest and his wife Ellen are living at 48 Grainger Street, Meadow Lane, Nottingham they are both 21 yrs of age. In the same census his family are living at 302 Meadow Lane, Nottingham and are shown as William 42 yrs a railway guard, he is living with his wife Eliza Ann 41 yrs and their children Albert 19 yrs a fitters apprentice, Harold James 13 yrs a scholar, and Winifred Elizabeth 7 yrs. Ellen Hollingworth and her children later lived at 95 Moreland Street, Meadow Lane, Nottingham
Private William Ernest Hollingworth, 1/7th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles), was killed in action on 24th April 1917. He is buried in Canadian Cemetery No. 2, Neuville-St. Vaast.
Death notices published on 15th May 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HOLLINGWORTH. – Killed in action, April 24th, William Hollingworth, beloved husband of Nelly Hollingworth. A bitter blow, a shock severe, to part with one we loved so dear. – From his sorrowing wife and children, Moreland-street. “HOLLINGWORTH. – Killed in action, April 24th, William Hollingworth, beloved eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Hollingworth, Meadow-lane, aged 27. A noble life laid down. – From sorrowing father, mother, brothers, and sister.”
