John Charles William Hill was born in 1896 he was the son of John William a domestic gardener and Roseanna Lummas Hill née Baker of Hickling, Melton Mowbray Leicestershire. John William was born in 1869 at Earley, Wiltshire, Roseanna Lummas Baker was born in 1869 at Mendlesham, Suffolk, they were married in 1893 their marriage was recorded in the Winchester registration district, they had 3 children, Mabel Annie born 1894, Mary Emily b1902 all born in Bishopstoke. In 1911 the family were living at Hickling village, James William 41 yrs is a domestic gardener, he is living with his wife Roseanna 41 yrs and their children, Mabel Annie 17 yrs a domestic servant, John Charles William 15 yrs a coal merchants clerk and Mary Emily 9 yrs a scholar

Military History

Lance Sergeant John Charles William Hill enlisted at Worcester, he served with the 1st battalion Grenadier Guards. He was killed in action on 9th December 1916 and is buried at AIF Burial Ground, Flers (grave ref V.A.6.)
