Pte. Butters attested at Nottingham on 11/12/1915 and was finally mobilised on 15/06/1916 at Derby. He was sent on to Wallsend the following day to train with the battalion. On 15/10/1916 the men embarked at Devonport for Mesopotamia and arrived at Basra on 22/11/1916. He was killed in action on 25/01/1917.
Death notice published 10th February 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BUTTERS. – Killed in action, January 26th, Private T. H. Butters, North Staffordshire Regiment, aged 34. For ever with the Lord. “BUTTERS. – Killed in action, January 26th, Private T. H. Butters, North Staffordshire Regiment. – From brother Ernest, sister Lizzie, and Alice.” In memoriam published 26th January 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BUTTERS. – In loving memory of Thomas Henry Butters, killed in action January 26th, 1916. [sic] Not changed, but glorified; sweetest memories. – Wife.” In memoriam published 26th January 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BUTTERS. - In loving memory of my dear husband, Thomas Henry Butters, killed in action Jan. 26th, 1917.
