He was the second son of Richard and Annie Ager Whitaker. His parents Richard and Annie (nee Ball) were married in the parish of St James Norlands, Kensington, on 16 September 1880; Annie had been born in London. They had four children; Mabel, Richard James Vernon (Vernon), Charles Ronald (Ron) and Elsie. Charles' father was described on various census as a lace manufacturer (1881), an estate agent (1891) and a yarn agent merchant (1911). In 1881 Richard and Annie were living at 14 Balmoral Road, Nottingham, but had moved to Musters Road, West Bridgford by 1891. There were three children at home on the night of the census; Mabel (9), Ronald (5) and Elsie (3). Richard employed a domestic servant, Harriett Wallhead (19). In 1901 Richard and Annie were living at 33 Millicent Road, West Bridgford with their four children and a servant/lady help, Maria Jones (24). Mabel, who was 19 years old, was a student at Nottingham University. The family had moved to 64 Addison Street, Nottingham, by 1911; only two of the children were at home on the night of the census, Charles and Elsie. Richard still employed a domestic servant, Ada Frost (23). Addison Street continued to be the family home until the death of Charles' parents. Charles' father died on 1 June 1919 aged 66, and his mother on 19 February 1927 aged 73.
Royal Army Service Corps, Remount Depot (Swaything). He died of pneumonia at Welsh Hospital, Netley, Southampton, and was buried in Nottingham Church Cemetery (grave ref St Paul's 10083). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Family headstone, Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery: 'in fondest remembrance of Richard the beloved and devoted husband of Anne Whitaker who died June 1st 1919 aged 66 years. The memory of the just is blessed. Also of Charles Ronald, dearly loved son of the above who died at Netley Hospital Feb 14th 1919 aged 33 years. With Christ which is far better. Also of the above Annie Ager Whitaker called home Feb 19th 1927 aged 73 years. His servants shall serve him and they shall see.'
