Family History

John William Hitchcock was born in 1885 he was the son of the late Leonard Hitchcock a coal miner and Eliza Hitchcock née Durow. Leonard Hitchcock was born in 1860 at Mugginstown, Derbyshire he died in 1896 at Smalley Derbyshire he was 36 yrs of age, Eliza Durow was born in 1861 at Staveley Derbyshire, they had 6 children. His mother re married in 1898 at Belper to Edward Loftus a coal miner (born 1864 at Staveley) In 1911 the family are living at 1 Mill Street, Ilkeston Edward Loftus 47 yrs is a coal miner, he is living with his wife Eliza Loftus 50 yrs and her two children John William Hitchcock 25 yrs a coal miner and Annie Hitchcock 11 yrs both shown as step children, also living is Constance Loftus 11 yrs of age. John William married Martha Gregory (born 28th July 1894) in 1911 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at 57 Granby Street, Ilkeston and had a daughter Ruby Blanche Latham Hitchcock born 13th August 1912. Commencing 24th April 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.

Military History

Private John William Hitchcock was a pre-war Territorial with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was mobilised and Embodied for war in Ilkeston on 15th October 1914. he was 24 yrs and 10 months old. Posted to the 1/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment he landed in France on 1st March 1915. He was wounded on September 27th in the right groin and bladder during the Battle of Loos and admitted to the Boulogne Hospital, He died at 4.20pm four days later and is buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery
