David Henry Johnson was born in 1888 he was the son of Henry a grocers assistant and Annie Alice Johnson née Farmer of Queen Street, Eastwood, Henry was born in 1865 Annie Alice Farmer was born in 1867 at Barlestone, Leicestershire, they were married on 18th December 1887 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 10 children In 1911 the family are living at 4 Queen Street, Eastwood, Henry is 46 yrs and is a grocers assistant, he is living with his wife Annie Alice 44 yrs and their children, including David Henry 23 yrs a grocers assistant. David married Hannah Elizabeth Knighton (born 31st May 1882) on 25th December 1917 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at Nottingham Road, Eastwood Nottinghamshire. The couple married during leave at Christmas 1917. Commencing 6th January 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.
Private David Henry Johnson was conscripted under the Derby Scheme in March 1916 serving initially with the Sherwood Foresters (36704) before transferring to the Machine Gun Corps. He was wounded in the left shoulder with shrapnel on August 29th 1917 and contracted Trench Fever in hospital. In April 1917 he was drafted a second time to France and in May and near Mount Kemmel was again wounded this time slightly. He was killed the day he joined a new unit,12th Bn Machine Gun Corps, whilst repairing his weapon on 16th June 1918 and is buried at Buried in Bouzincourt Communal Cemetery Extension.
