Charles John Rowell was born in 1897 at Edinburgh and was the son of George a game keeper and Eliza Rowell, of Bohunia Cottage, Burwash Common, Sussex. He had two siblings Mary b1899 at Dalgety, Scotland and George b1904 at Mayfield, Sussex. His pension record card shows his next of kin as his father George of Main Road, Underwood, Notts.

Military History

Corporal Charles John Rowell enlisted at Hastings Sussex and initially served with the service number 93864 in the Royal Field Artillery, he landed in France on 25th August 1915 and he was serving with the 1st battalion Black Watch when he was killed in action on 18th April 1918. Buried in Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy
