George Alfred was born in 1896 in Northampton and was the son of John a shoe maker and Mary Tarry . He was baptised at St Edund's Church Northampton on 22nd November 1896 , along with his siblings Arthur, Harry and Edith , at that date the family were living at 8 New Town Road, Northampton. George Alfred married his wife Florence Judd on 21st November 1906 in the Parish Church at Basford, they went on to have three children all born in Basford , George Alfred born 17th December 1905, Frederick Thomas born 5th October 1909 and Leslie born 22nd February 1912. they lived at 179 Exchange Road, West Bridgford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 37 Grainger Street, Meadows, Nottingham and are shown as George Alfred 29 yrs a railway shunter , he is living with his wife Florence 29 yrs (b1882 Holbeach Lincs) and their two children George Alfred 5 yrs and Fred Thomas 1 yrs also living with them is his sister in law Emily Judd 18 yrs a blouse finisher. Following his death is widow Florence received a letter from the Pension office dated 9th February 1918 informing her she would receive a pension of 27 shilling and 6 pence in respect of her and her three children to take effect from 18th February 1918.
Corporal George Alfred Tarry, enlisted at Nottingham on 30th October 1915 , he gave his age as 33 yrs and 6 months his address was 179 Exchange Road, West Bridgford and he was a shunter by trade. He had previously served with the Northamptonshire Regiment and had left when his time had expired. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 1st April 1916 . He landed in France on 8th December 1916 and joined the 7th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment on 13th December 1916. He was promoted to Corporal on 24th February 1917 .He was killed in action on 31st July 1917, he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial Ypres Belgium
In memoriam published on 31st July 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “TARRY. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Corpl. G. Tarry, Northampton Regt., killed in action July 31st, 1917.
