Charles was born in 1899 in West Markham and was the son of Arthur a carpenter foreman and Jane Smith. Arthur was originally from Oxford and Jane from Slentworth, Lincolnshire . The family appeared to settle in North Nottinghamshire and had a number of children in early 1890's their daughters Hetty and Ada were born in South Leverton ,they moved to North Kelsey (Lincolnshire ) in 1896 where their next two children George and Mary Jane were born. By 1899 they are in West Markham where Charles Henry was born and in the 1901 census the family are still in West Markham By the 1911 census we find Charles 13 years of age , he gives his place of birth as Markham and is a mate on board a barge called the Rosa May which is moored on Gringley Lock at Gringley , he appears to be alone on the barge.
He enlisted at Pontefract and served with the 10th battalion York and Lancaster Regiment ,his place of birth on Soldiers died in the Great War is given as South Leverton .He was killed in action during the first few days of the battle of the Somme. His body was not recovered or identified and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, on the Somme
