He was the son of George and Lucy Mason of 2 Cremorne Cresent Cremorne Street Meadows Nottingham. He married his wife Caroline Louisa Thornton on 30th May 1903 at St Georges Parish Church Nottingham and they went on to have the following children Louisa May born 5th April 1904, Millicent Grace born 23rd July 1910 and George William born 29th August 1912. They lived at 57 Rupert Street, Wilford Road, Meadows, Nottingham. Following his death his widow received a letter from the Ministry of pensions informing that she would be paid a pension of 29 shilling a week in respect of her and her children with effect from 3rd March 1919.
Private Ernest George Mason, enlisted in Nottingham on 10th December 1915, he was 38 yrs and 7 months of age , a painter and decorator, he lived at 57 Rupert St, Meadows, Nottingham, his next of kin was his wife Caroline of the same address. The following day he was placed into the reserves. On 27th July 1917 he was mobilised and on 2nd August 1916 was posted to C Company 15th battalion Durham Light Infantry. He landed in France on 13th November 1917 and was killed in action on 15th August 1918 and his name is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial.
Death notice published 30th August 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “MASON. – Officially reported killed in action August 15th, 1918, Pte. Ernest George Mason, Pioneer, Durham Light Infantry, 57 Rupert-street. If I could have raised his dying head, and heard his last farewell, the parting would not have been half so hard, for one I loved so well. His duty nobly done. – From his sorrowing wife and children, May, Grace, George.” In memoriam published 15th August 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “MASON. – In loving memory of my dearly loved husband, Pte. Ernest George Mason, D.L.I., 57 Rupert-street, killed in action August 15th, 1918, at Beaumont Hamel. Not while life lasts shall we ever forget you, but, oh, how I long to know where you sleep. – Sorrowing wife Louisa. “MASON. – In proud remembrance of our dear dad, Pte. Ernest George Mason, D.L.I., killed in action August 15th, 1918. May the heavenly winds blow softly, o'er a sweet and hallowed spot, where our loving dad lies sleeping, who will never be forgot. – Your loving children and Dorothy. “MASON. – In loving memory of Pte. Ernest George Mason, killed in action August 15th, 1918.
