Family History

Robert Pierce was born in 1887 at Liverpool he was the son of John a hawker and Agnes Pierce née Shadforth of Sheffield. John was born in 1847 in Ireland, Agnes Shadforth was born in 1855 at Newcastle upon Tyne, they were married in 1885 at Newcastle upon Tyne, they had 3 children, Joseph born 1890 Leeds and Agnes born 1892 Sheffield. He was the husband of May Pierce and in 1911 they lived at 2 Royston Terrace Hawthorn Street Meadows Nottingham. In the 1911 census he is living at 2 Royston Terrace, he is 24 yrs a general labourer, he is living with his wife May 25 yrs they state they have been married for under a year,

Military History

Private Robert Pierce enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to France 16th February 1915 and was killed in action, 7th August 1916, during the attack on the German positions at Delville Wood, France during the Battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.

Extra Information

His brother Joseph Pierce enlisted on 8th September 1914 at Sheffield, giving his address as 14 Attercliffe Road, Sheffield, he was posted to the Yorks and Lancaster Regiment, landing in France on 29th June 1915. He died of wounds on 3rd July 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Owing to the fact he was not born in Nottingham (born in Leeds) and never resided in Nottinghamshire he is not listed on the Nottinghamshire Roll of Honour
