Family History

Ferdinand Beckworth was born in 1885 he was the son of John a corporation labourer in the markets and fairs department and Hanna Beckworth née Hunt of 45 Burford Road Nottingham. John was born in 1859 and Hannah Hunt was born in 1856 both were born in Nottingham, they were married on 3rd August 1879 at St Peters Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 10 children sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at 4 Attercliffe Terrace, Glapton Road, Meadows, John 53 yrs is a corporation labourer, he is living with his wife Hannah 55 yrs and 4 of their children. Ferdinand married Ada Stevenson (born 21st January 1889) in 1910 in Nottingham and the father of Harold Beckworth born 9th March 1911 they lived at 1 Waterway Terrace, Waterway Street, Nottingham. In 1911 the family lived at 12 Eleanor Terrace Lamcote Street, Meadows, Nottingham. Ferdinand is 26 yrs and a packing case maker, he is living with his wife Ada 22 yrs and their sin Harold 1 month old. Commencing 26th March 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week Ada married Frederick Crane in 1923 and they lived at 1 Seaton Terrace Goodhead Street Meadows Nottingham.

Military History

Corporal Ferdinand Beckworth enlisted at Nottingham, he was killed in action on 3rd September 1916 in the attack on the German positions near Beaumont Hamel, France. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial (Pier and Face 10C 10D and 11A).

Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 23 September 1916: 'Beckworth. Killed in action September 3rd Corporal F Beckworth, Sherwood Foresters, age 32, of 2 Waterway Terrace, late Lamcote Terrace, Meadows. Wife and child.'
