Family History

David Vincent Shillito was the youngest of the four children of Thomas and Emma (née Raynes). All the children were born in Blyth, David on the 18 May 1896. His father had come from Scrooby, the son of a publicam, but spent his working life as a blacksmith and farrier. He worked in Blyth along Mill Lane (now Retford Road) next to the Rose and Crown. Northumberland Fusiliers 1/6 Bn (Territorial) A Coy Pte David Shillito Worksop Guardian 15 December 1916 The little village of Blyth has to mourn the death of another gallant soldier in Pte David Shillito, aged 21, the youngest son of Mr and Mrs Shillito. The deceased was killed in action in France. He was a bright clever lad and a favourite with all who knew him, and his death has caused general regret. Sincere sympathy is expressed with Mr and Mrs. Shillito in their great sorrow. David Vincent Shillito Retford Times 15 Dec 1916, Blyth received another shock on Friday when the news reached the village that Pte David Shillito, Northumberland Fusiliers, had been killed in action in France. He enlisted on 15 March this year, went out to France on 6 July and was killed on 16 November. When in Blyth he worked for Mr J M Levers and was a general favourite of all who knew him. He was a member of the choir for about six years and was an assistant bandmaster to the Boy Scouts. The blow had been a terrible one for his parents who have been recipients of a large number of sympathetic letters, and they want to take this opportunity to thank all friends who have kindly remembered them in their great sorrow. Mr and Mrs Shillito have another son, Ton, serving in France with the Royal Field Artillery.
