Arthur Graves was born in 1894 at South Muskham and was the son of Thomas a cottager and Eliza Graves née Bennett of Clay Lane, Clay Cross, Derbyshire His father Thomas was born in 1852 at Manby, Lincolnshire and his mother Eliza Bennett was born in 1857 at Long Bennington , they were married on 22nd November 1877 at Long Bennington they went on to have 14 children, sadly 5 died in infancy or early childhood, their children were, George b1880, Mary b1882, Martha all were born at Long Bennington, the family then appear to have moved to Newark where they had the following children, James b1886, Percy b1887, Henry b1889 the family then appear to move to South Muskham where they have the following children, Frank b1891, Annie b1892, Arthur b1894, Alfred b1897 and Reginald b1901. In the 1911 census the family are living at South Muskham village and are shown as Thomas 59 yrs a cottager, he is living with his wife Eliza 54 yrs and their children Percy 24 yrs a boot maker, Annie 19 yrs a home helper, Arthur 16 yrs a turner and Alfred 14 yrs an errand boy.
Private Arthur Graves enlisted at Coventry and served with the 1st battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He died of wounds on 17th October 1916 and is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery.
His brother Private Percy Graves enlisted at Derby in March 1916. He served with the 1/4th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers , he went to France in June 1916. He was killed in action on 15th September 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
