Family History

Ralph Hall was born in 1892 at Hodnet, Shropshire and was the son of Richard a general labourer and Sarah Hall née Cope of Hodnet, Shropshire. His father Richard was born in 1852 at Hodnet, his mother Sarah Cope was born in 1851 at Longton, Staffordshire, they were married in 1879 their marriage was recorded in the Market Drayton, Shropshire registration district, they had a further child a daughter Fanny born 1880 at Hodnet. In the 1911 census the family are living at 'The Gardens', Widmerpool and are shown as Richards Hall 59 yrs a general labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah 60 yrs and their son Ralph 19 yrs a groom and gardener.

Military History

Private Ralph Hall attested on 4th December 1915 at West Brigeford, He gave his age as 24 yrs 6 months and his address as The Gardens, Widmerpool, he gave his occupation as a journeyman gardener, he served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and was mobilised for war on 14th February 1916 at Derby. Landing in France on 14th June 1916 he was wounded on 14th July 1916 with a gunshot wound to the arm and discharged from the Army on 18th February 1917. He was awarded Silver War Badge (26584), he was still receiving a pension in 1922 (whilst living in Birmingham) so may have been commemorated as a war fatality in error.
