Albert Leonard Kemp was born in 1889 the son of William John and Zilpha Kemp née Chapman of Hawkhurst, Sussex. His father William John, an agricultural labourer, was born in 1846 at Ticehurst and died in 1914. Zilpha Chapman was born in 1863 at Filmwell, Sussex. They were married on 17th May 1885 at Tichurst and had 11 children. Their son Albert Leonard married Elizabeth Jupp (born 1891) in 1914 at Ticehurst, Sussex. They had a son Maurice Leonard Robert born 1917 and lived at Laurel Cottage, Burwash Weald, Sussex.

Military History

18th Company Machine Gun Corps. Formerly 25305 Army Veterinary Corps. Private Albert Leonard Kemp, residence Burwash Weald, enlisted at Hastings, Sussex. He died of wounds received in action at the 20th Casualty Clearing Station, France, on 26th October 1918. He is buried at Premont British Cemetery, France (grave ref. II. B. 6), which was used by the 20th CCS from October 1918. CWGC - History of Premont British Cemetery (extract): The village of Premont is about 19.5 kilometres south-east of Cambrai. It 'was captured by the 30th American Division on the 8th October 1918. Premont British Cemetery was made and used by four Casualty Clearing Stations (the 20th, 50th, 55th and 61st), which came to Bohain in October 1918, and it was closed in the following December. Some years later 165 graves were added to it from the following sites [listed].' (www.cwgc.org)

Extra Information

Note: No connection yet traced with Nottinghamshire and identity of AW Kemp therefore uncertain. Alternative CWGC record, Arthur Lane Kemp, Australian Tunnelling Corps d. 1921, buried Australia. Albert's widow Elizabeth was awarded a pension of 32 shillings and 8 pence a week with effect from 12th May 1919. Probate proven (with Will) on 9th April 1920 at Lewes: Albert Leonard Kemp of Burwash, Sussex, died 26th October 1918 at 20th Casualty Clearing Station, France. Administration awarded to his widow, Elizabeth Kemp. Effects £158 and 10 shillings.
