Louis Stanley Starkey was born on 30th July 1900 at Radford and was the second son of Horace Henry a hosiery warehouseman and Clara Starkey nee Burton. The CWGC record gives his parents' address as 17 Kimbolton Avenue, Derby Road, Nottingham, while the notice of his death in the local paper in 1919 gives 6 Bute Avenue. His father Horace Henry was born in 1873 at Tamworth, Staffordshire, his mother Clara Burton was born in 1875 at Nottingham, they were married in 1895 at Nottingham and went on to have 5 children, sadly one was to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Horace William b1897, Louis Stanley b1900, Leslie b1904 and Irene b1908 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family is living at 2 Laker Street, Nottingham and are shown as Horace Henry Starkey 38 yrs a hosiery warehouseman, he is living with his wife Clara 36 yrs and their children Horace William 14 yrs a scholar, Louis 10 yrs a scholar, Leslie 7 yrs and Irene 3 yrs.
Formerly Royal Naval Air Service. Aircraftman second class Louis Stanley Starkey enlisted in the Royal Navy Air Service on 23rd February 1918 as a Boy Mechanic. He served at HMS President II (a shore training establishment on the River Thames) and following training was drafted to Royal Air Force Malta (Seaplane Base) where he was a wireless operator. He died of septicaemia on 18th October 1919 at 57 General Hospital at Marseilles. He is buried in Mazargues War Cemetery, Marseilles (grave ref. III.C.4).
Nottingham Evening Post notice, 23 October 1919: 'Starkey. On October 19th (sic), RNAS, Wireless Operator, second son of Horace and Clara Starkey of 6 Bute Avenue, age 19. Mother, father, brothers, sister.'
