Hiram was born in 1889 in Nottingham and was the son of Hiram a lace maker and Martha Slack née Larkham of 8 Howitt Street, Nottingham. His father was born in 1857 in Basford and his mother Martha Larkham was born in 1861 in Chard, Somerset, they were married in 1881, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 7 children who were : Mabel b1882 Nottm, Ada b1883 Basford, Louisa b1887 Basford, Hiram b1889 Nottm, , Rose Hannah b1892 Hyson Green, Susan b1894 Basford and Henry Herbert b1899 Basford. In 1901 they lived at 6 Whitbread Street New Basford Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 8 Howitt Street, Nottingham and are shown as Hiram 54 yrs a lace maker he is living with his wife Martha 50 yrs and their children Louisa 24 yrs a curtain folder, Rose Hannah 19 yrs a cardboard box maker, Susan 17 yrs a swiss lace maker, and Henry Herbert 12 yrs a scholar. In the same 1911 census Hiram is shown as a serving soldier a Private 25 yrs of age in the King's Liverpool Regiment serving in India.
Lance Corporal, Hiram Slack, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1st Battalion The King's (Liverpool Regiment). He is shown in the 1911 census with his regiment in India. He landed in France with his battalion on 12th August 1914 and he was killed in action 14th November 1914. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate.Menin Gate Memorial Ypres
Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 14th November 1916:- “SLACK. – In loving memory of our dear son and brother, Lance-Corporal H. Slack, killed in action, November 14th, 1914, aged 26 years. Two years have passed and still to memory dear, his loving name we breathe and shed a silent tear. His brother Private Henry (Harry) Slack, “D” Company, 2/4th Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, was taken prisoner on 26th March 1918. His home address was 119 Birkin Avenue, Nottingham.
