Thomas Smith (junior) was born in 1888 the son of the late Thomas Smith (senior) a farmer and Elizabeth Ann Smith née Shaw of Lodge Farm, Wysall Lane,Keyworth, Nottinghamshire Thomas Smith (senior) was born in 1839 at Granby, he died in 1918 aged 79 yrs, Elizabeth Ann Shaw was born in in 1855 at Keyworth, married on 18th June 1883 at Keyworth they had 3 children. In 1911 the family lived a Lodge Farm, Wysall Lane, Keyworth
