Benjamin Allen was born in 1887 at Nottingham and was the son of John a gardener and Betsy Allen née Bramley of 3 Buxton Street, Nottingham. His father John was born in 1849 at Wymswold and his mother Betsy Bramley was born in 1847 at West Leake, they were married in 1869 their marriage was recorded in the Loughborough Registration district, they went on to have 8 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Harriett b1877,Normanton Fanny b1879 Brant Broughton, John b1882 Nottingham, , Benjamin b1887 Nottingham, Clara b1889, Nottingham Maud b1879 Loughborough, Benjamin Allen married his wife Susannah Amelia Mitchell on 26th April 1909 at the Nottingham Registry Office, they had a daughter, Annie born 16th May 1910. The family lived at 3 Wilford Terrace, Waterway Street, Meadows, Nottingham with Hannah Elizabeth Mitchell, Benjamin's mother-in-law, Walter Henry Mitchell, his brother-in-law and Mabel Annie, his sister-in law.
Lance Corporal Allen enlisted under the Derby Scheme on 04/12/1915 and was mobilised for training on 03/06/1916. On 07/06/1916 he was posted to 10th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment at Cannock Chase, and on 29/08/1916 he was transferred to 3rd Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment training at Hull. After training he arrived in France on 22/09/1916 and was sent to 12th Infantry Depot, Calais.From there he was transferred to 6th Battalion, York & Lancaster Regiment, and on 13/03/1917 became a paid lance corporal. His battalion was involved in the initial heavy fighting during the Battle of Arras He was wounded on 04/05/1917 and taken to 45th Casualty Clearing Station at Achiet le Grand, where he died the same day. He was buried at Achiet le Grand Communal Cemetery Extension.

Fondly remembered. “ALLEN. – In loving memory of Lance-Corpl. Ben Allen, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Allen, 3, Buxton-street, died of wounds in France, May 4th, 1917. Always happy and cheerful, with a heart that knew no fear, he stood to face life's battles, for those he loved so dear.
