Family History

John was the son of David a tailor and draper and Alice Godley (née Bottom) of Centre Buildings, Whitwell. David and Alice had two further children Dan and Sarah. By 1911the family had moved toIn the 1901 census the family are shown living at Centre Building in Whitwell Front Street Hodthorpe Whitwell. However John had left home to board with William Woods and his family at 50 Woodbank Crescent Sheffield. John's effects of £958 17shillings and 9 pence were left to his brother Dan Godley an outfitter (Probate 23/9/1921).

Military History

He was attached to the 286th Company Machine Gun Corps. He died in Pehawar India and is buried in Peshawar British Cemetery Grave Reference: XXVI 780. He is also commemorated on the Delhi Memorial (India Gate) India.
