Ernest Loseby Holmes

Acting Sergeant Ernest Loseby Holmes, enlisted in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, he initially served with service number 32225 in the Royal Army Medical Corps and landed in France on 10th May 1915. He was later transferred to the 9th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders, he was killed in action on 17th April 1918. He is buried in La Clytte Military Cemetery, where he is commemorated by a special memorial. He won the military medal which was gazetted in 'London Gazette,' 21st September 1916 he won it whilst he was serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps.

Article published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 21st September 1917 :- “A NOTTINGHAM CORPORAL. “DECORATED WITH MILITARY MEDAL BY THE MAYOR. “A brief but interesting ceremony took place in the Mayor’s Parlour at the Exchange Hall, Nottingham, to-day, [21st September 1917] when the Mayor (Coun. J. E. Pendleton) decorated Corpl. E. L. Holmes, R.A.M.C., with the military medal which was recently awarded him for long service and bravery. Corpl. Holmes, who is native of the city and whose home is 206, Sherwood street, enlisted when the war broke out and received his decoration for gallantry in rescuing wounded under heavy fire. “The Mayor warmly congratulated Holmes upon the distinction he had gained, observing that he was a credit to the city, and would always have the pleasant reflection that he had faithfully served his country in her time of peril. His Worship expressed the hope that the Corporal would be spared to live a long and useful life, and the Sheriff (Coun. R. H. Swain) also extended his congratulations to Corpl.
