Family History

John was the son of the Reverend John Ellis who had the Living at Hungarton Vicarage between 1886 and 1918. In 1901 he was boarding aged 10 at St Cuthbert's College, Sparken Hill, Worksop. By 1911 he was again a boarder at Bromyard Grammar School Herefordshire. However at this time he was also an assistant master. Sometime later he emigrated to Canada where he worked as a rancher.

Military History

He enlisted into the Canadain Infantry, Manitoba Regiment on 23rd September 1914 at Valcartierin Quebec. He died of a wound received while on patrol duty near Hill 60. He had been an N.C.O. in the 6th Canadian Scottish and was commissioned on June 8th in place of an officer killed in action that day. He is buried in Hazebrouck Communal Cemetery Nord, grave reference I A 8
