Harry was the son of Henry John and Fanny Pilcher Clayton of 104 Brincliffe Edge Road Sheffield. He had a brother George and sister Doris. In 1901 Fanny Pilcher Clayton was head of the family and living at Chesterfield Road Norton Derbyshire with her 3 children.

He enlisted while living in Canada and was buried in Browns Road , Military cemetery, Festubert , Pas de Calais, France grave reference V F 16
