Family History

Henry was the son of Matthew a wine and spirit merchant and Maude Mary Carter. Matthew and Maude had six children , Henry, Joseph Robinson, Matthew Schofield, Mary, Maude and Marjorie. On 19th October 1895 at St Georges Church, Barnsley Henry was baptised. The family address was 52 Dodsworth Road Barnsley. In 1901 and 1911 the family was living at 109 Dodsworth Road. However, Henry had left home to become a student boarder at St Cuthbert's College Sparken Road Worksop.

Military History

Henry enlisted in September 1914 at Grimsby. He was buried in Becourt Military Cemetery Becorde- Becourt, Somme France Grave Reference: I M 13

Extra Information

The following is an extract from 'The Cuthbertian ' college magazine June 1916 Private Henry Carter, of the 10th Lincs., joined the nucleus of the O.C. Company in the Grimsby "Pals" Battalion (10th Lincs.) in September, 1914 and had been at the front during the whole of the present year. He was struck while in the trench by a shell splinter early in the present June, and killed instantaneously, another O.C.,J. Griffiths, of the same battalion, having a narrow escape from the same shell.
