He was the son of William and Ellen Brown of 86 Portland Street Whitwell Mansfield. He was the brother of Stanley Victor, Albert George and Sydney Thomas Brown. In 1901 the family lived a t52 Alexandra Cottages Beckenham Kent and in 1911 at 28 Lucas Place Penge London.
Frederick Charles Brown enlisted in the 1/28th London Regiment (Artist Rifles. On the outbreak of war the battalion was based in Euston Road London. It went to France on 28 October 1914, although the medal index card would suggest that Frederick was not with them. The battalion became an Officer Training Corps unit whilst in France. On 16 November 1914, Frederick was commissioned into the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) and joined the 9th Battalion. The 9th battalion landed at Suvla Bay on the night of 6/7th August. The 7th was a day of frustration for the officers and men who had expected to attack immediately. However, there was a delay allowing the enemy to make preparations for the allied attack which was made by the 11th (9th Battalion's Division) and 13th Divisions. At some point during the day Frederick was killed. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial Gallipoli.
