Family History

Arthur Graney was born in Ironville, Derbyshire, he was baptised on 20th May 1885 at Providence United Methodist Church, Ironville and was the son of Joseph and Emily Graney née Smedley. He married his wife Sarah Elizabeth Shannon (born 15th May 1889 Ballywater, Ireland) in 1908, their marriage was recorded in the Belper registration district, they lived at Lavrick Road, Jacksdale they had a son Walter born 2nd November 1910 at Pyehill. In the 1911 census the family were living at 36 Pyehill, Jacksdale and were shown as Arthur 25 yrs a brickworks labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah Elizabeth 21 yrs and their son Walter 5 months old. Following his death his widow Sarah was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence which commenced on 26th May 1919

Military History

Private Arthur Graney enlisted at Eastwood whilst residing at Jacksdale, he served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and was killed in action on 10th September 1918 in Italy and is buried at Giavera del Montello, Provincia di Treviso, Veneto, Italy
