Family History

Horace Cartledge was born in 1894 at Ironville, Derbyshire and baptised on 3rd October 1894 at Ironville he was the son of Charles Wood a clerk at an ironworks and Isabella Cartledge née Chambers of Wagstaff Lane, Jacksdale. His father Charles Wood Cartledge was born in 1859 at Ticknall, Derbyshire and his mother Isabella Chambers was born in 1865 at Brinsley, they were married on 9th December 1883 at Ironville and went on to have 6 children, 1 however died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Samuel b1885 Ironville, Henry b1886 Ironville, Reginald b1890 Ironville, Archibald b1890 Codnor Park, Charles William b1891 Codnor Park and Horace bo1894 Codnor Park. In the 1911 census the family are living at Dixie Street, Jacksdale and are shown as Charles Wood Cartledge 52 yrs an ironworks clerk, he is living with his wife Isabella 46 yrs and their children, Henry 25 yrs an insurance agent, Archibald 21 yrs a blacksmith's striker, Charles William 20 yrs a balcksmith's striker and Horace 17 yrs a Co- op shop assistant.

Military History

Private Horace Cartledge enlisted at Eastwood whilst residing at Jacksdale, he served in the 2/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 27th April 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France.
