Family History

Thomas Hawley was born in 1881 at Ilkeston, he was the son of James Hawley a coal miner and Emily Hawley née Parr James was born in 1839 at Mapperley, Derbyshire, he died in 1910 aged 71 yrs Emily Parr was born in 1843 at Ilkeston, she died in 1916 aged 73 yrs they were married on 24th April 1864 at Cotmanhay they had 7 children. Thomas married Sarah Ann Baker (born 9th February 1879 Ilkeston) on 26th October 1901 at the parish church at Cotmanhay, they had children: Henry Victor, born 01/03/1905; Leonard, born 11/03/1911; Stanley, born 29/12/1912 and Cissie, born 15/11/1915. they family lived at 13 Carlton Street, Mansfield. Commencing 22nd April 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 28 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Sapper Thomas Hawley enlisted on 4th May 1915 at Mansfield, giving his age as 34 yrs and 286 days, he was a coal miner. He had previously seen service in South Africa (Boer War ) with the Sherwood Foresters and left the Army Time expired. A letter from manager of Sherwood Colliery : Dear Sir, The bearer, Thomas Hawley, has worked here for over 6 years, before joining the Army in 1914. He is a thoroughly capable miner, can take charge of other men, and in my opinion, quite competent for tunnelling work. C. W. Heathcote. Manager, 24/06/1916 Landing in France on 2nd October 1916 he was killed in action on 3rd October 1917 he is buried in Dozingham Military Cemetery, Belgium.
