Henry Dixon enlisted on 5 August 1914 and after training was posted to 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment), arriving in France on 9 February 1915. The battalion were in Brigade reserve billets near La Flique and the war diary mentions that on 5th March 1915, nine men were wounded when the Germans shelled the billets of HQ company.
