Parents: William and Sarah Crowder of 32 Ratcliffe Gate, Mansfield. Wife; Annie, nee Redfern married 23/04/1904. Children: Edith born 05/09/1911; Agnes, born 22/04/1911; Jessie May, born 07/11/1913; Sarah Annie, born 17/04/1916 and Lily born after her father's death in 1918. There were also 2 sons, both called Ernest who died as babies, one born in 1903 (before marriage) died 1904 and one born and died 1910.

Military History

Initially enlisted on 09/01/1900 aged 19 years and 9 months old. Served in South Africa (Boer War) 24/04/1900 to 09/04/1901.Reserve with Sherwood Foresters until 14/04/1907 when he re-enlisted, back to the reserve force on 15/06/1908 and re-engaged for 4 years from 22/05/1914

Extra Information

Received South Africa Star for his service during the Boer War. His widow, Annie married George Whalley in late 1919 but she died March 1920, aged 35, leaving the 5 girls aged from 2 to 15 orphans. Edith received her father's medal has she was by then his next of kin. Ernest was also known as John Ernest.
