Family History

Samuel was born in 1890 the son of William Burton a hosiery frame work knitter. In 1891, William with the 9 month old Samuel was living on Woodborough Lane in Lambley. By 1901 William was living at Green Lane Head in Lambley with Samuel. Samuel had two older sisters but their mother had died prior to 1901. In 1911 Samuel was living with one of his married sisters (Mrs Dewey). They were living at 4 Oxford Terrace, Archer Street, Nottingham.

Military History

Samuel enlisted into the Notts & Derby Regiment Special Reserves on 4 August 1908 at Nottingham. As a reservist he attended training camps annually until In 1914 he was re-engaged on 17 July 1914. He was mobilised 11 Aug 1914 and went to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force on 11 Nov 1914. He was killed in action and is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate memorial. His personal effects were forwarded to his father at Green Lane Head, Lambley in 1916. He was eligible for the 1914 star, British and Victory medals
