Family History

Douglas William Powell was born in 1894 the son of William a maltsters labourer and Selina Powell née Gelsthorpe of Chestnut Grove, Gedling. William was born in 1852 at March, Cambridgeshire, Selina Gelsthorpe was born in 1850 at Southwell, married in 1892 at Nottingham, they had a further son Grover born in 1893 at Nottingham. In 1911 the family were living at Chestnut Grove, Gedling, William 59 yrs is a maltsters labourer and Douglas 17 yrs a design copier.

Military History

Private Douglas William Powell enlisted at Carlton whilst residing at Gedling , he initially served with the service number 37481 in the North Staffordshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 23rd August 1918 and is buried at Gomiecourt South Cemetery, France.
