Family History

Arthur Merry (junior) was born in 1899 and was the son of Arthur Merry (senior) and his second wife Joanna Merry née Pinfold, of Stoke Bardolph village. Arthur Merry was born in 1863 at Middleton Cheney, Northamptonshire, he married his first wife Sarah French (b1852 North Ashton died 1885) on 2nd November 1882. Arthur married his second wife Joanna Pinfold (born 1862 Middleton Cheney) on 6th July 1890 at Middleton Cheney Joanna brought two children to their marriage, May Elizabeth Pinfold b1882 and Emily Amelia b1883) they went on to have the following children, George Thomas b1892, Alfred b1895, Arthur b1899, Samuel Owen b1902 and William Henry b1903 all were born at Stoke Bardolph. In the 1911 census the family are living at Stoke Bardolph and are shown as Arthur Merry 48 yrs a widow and an agricultural labourer, he is living with his children, George Thomas 19 yrs an agricultural labourer, Alfred 16 yrs an ag lab, Arthur 12 yrs a scholar, Samuel Owen 9 yrs a scholar, William Henry 8 yrs a scholar and May Elizabeth Pinfold 22 yrs a house keeper shown as his second wife's daughter.

Military History

Private Arthur Merry enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number L/1618 in the Royal Field Artillery. He was killed in action on 16th August 1917 whilst serving with the 7th battalion Somerset Light Infantry. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial.

Extra Information

His brother Lance Corporal Alfred Merry enlisted at Nottingham, serving with the Bedfordshire Regiment he was killed in action on 22nd March 1918 and having no known grave his names is commemorated on the Poziers Memorial.
