Thomas Valentine was born in 1893 in Warmley, Yorkshire and was the son of Thomas a winding engineer in a colliery and Eliza Williams nee Wheater of 53 Gedling Road, Carlton, Nottingham. His father Thomas was born in 1859 in Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire and his mother Eliza Wheater was born in 1871 Guisley, Yorkshire, they were married in 1890 in Gusiborough, Yorkshire and went on to have 15 children , however sadly 5 died in infancy or early childhood prior to 1911. Their surviving children list on the 1891/1901/1911 census were : Alfred George b1881 Ebbw Vale,(possibly from a first marriage of Thomas as his wife Eliza was only born in 1871) Thomas Valentine b1893 Warmley, Yorks Francis Henry b1895 Warmley, Yorks, Harold b1896 Warmley, Yorks, Olive Cordelia b1899 Castleford, Yorks, Gladys b1902 Lambley, John Lewis b1903 Lambley, Harry b1905 Lambley and Christopher b1908 Gedling. In the 1911 census the family are living at 53 Gedling Road, Carlton and are shown as Thomas 52 yrs a winding engineer in a colliery, he is living with his wife Eliza 40 yrs and their children Thomas Valentine 18 yrs a miner, Francis Henry 16 yrs a miner, Harold 15 yrs an apprentice mechanic, Olive Cordelia 12 yrs a scholar, John Lewis 8 yrs a scholar, Harry 6 yrs a scholar and Christopher 3 yrs.
Private. Thomas Valentine Williams, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2nd Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He landed in France on 30th September 1915 and he was killed in action on 18th November 1916 at Beaumont Hamel. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
Obituary published 7th December 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WILLIAMS. – Killed in action, about November 18th, Pte. Thomas Valentine (Val), Signaller K.O.Y.LI., the dearly loved son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Williams, Main-street, Gedling. His loving smile, his dear sweet face, never on earth can be replaced. – From his heart-broken father and mother, sisters and brothers (and Harold in Salonika).” In memoriam published 18th November 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WILLIAMS. – In memory of Pte. T. V. Williams, Signaller, K.O.Y.L.I., killed in action Beaumont Hamel, November 18th, 1916. – Sadly missed by his loving brothers and sisters (Harold in Salonika). “WILLIAMS. – Killed in action, November 18th, 1916, and brother Signaller Thomas Valentine Williams, K.O.Y.L.I.
