Born 1896 in London the son of Reverend the Honourable Alberic E. Bertie, M.A., and the Lady Caroline Bertie, of Gedling Rectory later 86, Woodstock Rd., Oxford. He was one of 7 children, the fourth and youngest son. he was educated at Evelyns and Winchester College, he was still there in 1911 Ninian. In 1915 directory Rev Bertie was Rector & Rural Dean of Gedling, living at the Rectory. Ninian's older brother Aubrey also served in war as a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy. He survived.
On the outbreak of war Ninian went to the Royal Military College at Sandhurst from where he was posted to the 60th Rifles on 23rd December 1914. He was attached to the 6th Reserve Regiment until 6 March 1914 when he joined the 4th Battalion at the Front. He was killed in action at Hooge near Ypres on 8 May 1915 and was buried there. He is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate memorial in Belgium. Eligible for the 1915 Star, British and Victory medals.

BERTIE.“Will of Son of the Rector of Gedling. “Second-Lieutenant Ninian Mark Kerr Bertie, 4th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, of Gedling Rectory, Notts., who was killed in action “in Flanders” on May 8th last, aged 18 years, a nephew of the Earl of Abingdon, and of Sir Francis Bertie, British Ambassador at Paris, and a nephew of the Earl of Antrim, left unsettled property valued for probate at £180. He died intestate and a bachelor, and letters of administration of his property have been granted to his father, the Rev. Hon.
